This is a pressing question that has many answers!  Which is frustrating and confusing.  Are you going from Facebook to Twitter or from Twitter to Facebook?  There are different options!

I wanted to come out with the definitive guide on what you can do and what you can’t do to link Facebook and Twitter.

Updating From Twitter to a Facebook

Within Facebook, you can add the application Selective Tweet Status:  http://apps.facebook.com/selectivetwitter/ You can go to the link directly or you can search for it in the Search box by entering Selective Tweets.  This can be added to your Facebook user account or your Fan Page.  It’s easy to configure and all you do is when you tweet, you just add an #fb at the end of the tweet and it will update your status.

There is another Twitter application but it sends every tweet to Facebook, which is just annoying.  So don’t do it.

Updating from Facebook to Twitter

Conversely, you may want to send your Facebook user updates out to Twitter from Facebook.  Well, I have bad news.  It can’t be done.  There used to be a way to find the RSS Feed of your Status Updates and feed that into Twitter but I’ve searched high and low and Facebook seems to have hidden it.  So to my knowledge, there is no way to send your personal user Status Updates out to Twitter automatically from Facebook.

What you can do is send your Fan Page status updates from Facebook out to Twitter. And you do that by going to http://www.Facebook.com/Twitter.  Then you just link your Fan page to your Twitter account.  You can turn it off again by going to the same URL and click Unlink.

Using a Twitter client opens up a world of possibilities to update multiple social networks at one time.  My personal favorite is Hootsuite but you can also use Tweetdeck.  All you do is add the Social Networks you’d like to update and check off where you want to send your post.

Ping.fm and Posterous are other posting sites where you can post to multiple social networking sites at once.

Oooweee am I excited about the new Hootsuite 5! I was originally a Tweetdeck gal because I liked that you could see more tweets in each column. But Hootsuite fixed that with their latest version.

When I started looking at it this morning I started to get very cranky. It looked like you had to use the New Twitter way of Re-tweeting. I don’t like the new way. I’m old school.  You can’t edit it and the orignial tweeter doesn’t see these Hidden Retweets.

But there is a way to go back to the original way of retweeting and I talk about it in the video as well as show you a few other great new features.  To change back to the old way of retweeting, click on the Owl in the upper left corner, then Settings, then Preferences and uncheck Use Twitter Web Retweets.  Then you will be good to go!

If you are using Hootsuite or Tweetdeck, you will not see all of your tweets that have been retweeted in Twitter.  Some of them are hidden in the web application of Twitter.  That makes me a little cranky.

If someone is using the web application of Twitter and uses that Retweet button they have there, you will not see it in your mentions area of Hootsuite and Tweetdeck.  So you should go into the web application every once in awhile to check if you have any retweets there.  There is a Retweets link right below the Favorites link on your home page.  Watch the video for more info on that.

But what has been possibly even more useful is the forum.  It’s a warm, supportive place where everyone can get and give advice in a safe environment.  We cheer each other on, try and keep each other accountable and test each others products.

If you don’t have a place like this, find one.  Sonia’s Blueprint is closed for now but I would recommend getting on the list to get notification when she opens it back up.  There is also the Third Tribe which has a great forum for support.

Everyone needs a place to let their hair down -even if it’s blue.

@PamelaIWilson is the brains behind Big Brand System and she will make you look goooood with her amazing graphic design wizardry.  Her website headers are beautiful!

@CB4Wildlife aka Carole Brown, the Eco System Gardening master.  She teaches you how to make your garden green, wildlife friendly and beautiful.

@CandysBytes and @YolandaFacio – These two ladies teamed up to become Two Chicks at Home – a great site for tips on how to successfully work at home.  And it has a great Chicken theme.

@CatherineCaine – She is truly awesome and helps you make your web presence awesome through her Be Awesome Online blog.  Wonderful advice to help you get your website shiny.  Sign up for her newsletter!

@TheStudioSource aka Stacey Cornelius.  She is doing great things for artists who need help building their business.  Find her at The Studio Source.

@JoeThoron a website marketing smarty.  He has a Pre-advertising site check service that you should definitely take advantage of before sending traffic to your site.

@LexiRodrigo helps you sell more online with her fantastic writing, among other things.  Check her out at www.AlexisRodrigo.com

@SusanJohnstone gets you through your resistance with her The Heart’s Voice blog.  She knows what’s stopping you – amazing!

Twellow is fantastic!  Twellow, the “Yellow Pages of Twitter”, is a web-based Twitter tool that helps you search people’s bios and locations.  It’s a great tool for searching on local tweeps to follow or just putting in keywords to target who you are following.

Twellow can be a great way to grow your following – just follow targeted people and about 50% of the people will follow you back.  Then you need to talk to those people.  Don’t just follow them and never connect.  Say hello, be friendly, put them on a Twitter list to get your tweeps organized. Watch the tutorial and leave a comment for Grandma! What else do you need to know?

Today I’m going to get a little serious on you.  I may even choke up a bit.  I’m going to talk about some fantastic ladies that have made a difference in my life.  These are amazing women who inspire, motivate and challenge me to be better.  Everyone needs people like this in their lives and I feel blessed that I have been connected to this smart and, I have to add, very good looking, group of entrepreneurs.

We connected via Twitter and that’s why I love Twitter so much.  If you don’t have a group like this, you need to get one.  Being an entrepreneur is hard work.  You need a support system.  Someone who knows what you are going through when you are feeling a little overwhelmed.  I love these ladies!  Follow them on Twitter.

@characterinc – Julie Watson Smith and I just live a few blocks apart but Twitter really brought us together.  She is an amazing mom, entrepreneur and passionate advocate of character.  She’s doing great things to teach families how to help their children grow into responsible, respectful, grateful people.  Which is a great thing – check her out www.CharacterInc.com She also has a fun spirit and gets me to jump in lakes in January.

@theinnermarykay and @affiliatewealthpartner – Mary Kay Morgan came to Boulder in September and I’m so glad she did.  She is a natural connector of people and will be always be there when you need her.  She’s doing some great things with her www.AffiliateWealthPartner.com website that matches conscious businesses with affiliates.  She’s raising the bar and taking some of the yuckiness out of affiliate marketing.

@alexisneely – Alexis Neely is a dynamo.  She recently moved to Colorado and has so much going on it makes my head spin.  And she does it all well.  Which makes me a little mad but also inspires me.  She’s a lawyer, works with her LIFT foundation and recently launched her newest blog at www.AlexisMartinNeely.com about Life, Business and the Pursuit of Truth.

To review, here are the steps you need to take:

1. Sign up for Twitter at www.Twitter.com
2. Fill out your bio and upload your picture.
3. You can participate in the conversation by including the hashtag #MD10 or #MPI anywhere in your tweet.
4. To make things easier, go to www.TweetChat.com, log in with your twitter name and put one of the hashtags in to break out the conversation.  TweetChat will automatically enter the hashtag into your tweet.

Here’s how to update your Twitter Status directly from your Facebook Fan Page status updates. Bad news, there is no way to easily update Twitter from Facebook user accounts. Grrrr Facebook, sometimes you make Grandma angry. To link your Facebook Fan Page with your Twitter account, just go to www.Facebook.com/twitter to get started. Watch the tutorial for more information about updating your Facebook User account and Twitter at the same time.

Here is a great way to use Twitter Search to find questions to answer on Twitter in your field. Help people out, engage them in a conversation and find people who need your help. You can also use Twitter as a powerful search tool to find out what people have questions about. Then make a free e-book on top 10 questions. It’s all good!
